Citadel C23 Chaos Ogre

Continuing with the army, next up is one of the two ogres that will feature in the ranks of chaos. Now this guy is my favourite of all of the C23 Jes Goodwin ogres, the chaos ogre, released in July 1985 (Christ! Nearly 40 years ago!).
This is the third or fourth time I've painted this model over the years and each time, I've added the same SH1 metal shield, basically because it's the only one I have that's big enough to look suitable on him. Plus, it's a damn fine chaotic looking shield of course.
The face is an absolute joy to paint with such menacing detail. I went for a fairly pale complexion to contrast nicely with the weathered dark bronze armour.
The plan was to get started on Skrag the Slaughterer next but I've discovered that my one has casting issues around the face so I'll have to have a rethink on what's next while I look out for a replacement Skrag. Meanwhile, there's another ongoing army piece to finish off which hopefully should be sometime next week.

  1. This guy is fantastic. Love how the verdigris makes the armour pop (I'll be borrowing that idea). I also had a scroll through the previous posts too. So much eye candy! Following.

    1. Thanks! That's Nihilakh Oxide but I thin it out and build it up slowly. Thank you following, didn't realise people still did! I keep the blog going despite Facebook and Insta taking more precedence these days. Now following your blog. Those hobgoblins look great!

    2. Thank you. That's very kind. RE: blogs - I completely get that FB and IG posts get more interactions, but when I was getting back into the hobby, blogs were an invaluable resource. Much easier to search and find what I'm after than with other social media (often it's 'what the hell is that supposed to be?' on the older sculpts!). I really appreciate them.

    3. Yeah youre right. Despite the emergence of more prominent platforms, I still value blogs for resource and still use them for inspirational searches more than anything else. I guess that's why I feel its important to keep mine going.

  2. That's a beautifully painted Ogre, the skin tone is great and the bronze armour works very well. Good choice (repeatedly!) with the shield.

    1. Thanks very much, Lee. I'm pleased with the lighter flesh tone. It's a mix of Rakarth Flesh and AK Brown Rose with Palid Wych Flesh when layering up.

  3. Very nice work on this classic miniature! I just acquired this one myself and have been pondering a paint scheme for him. Yours has given me a few ideas...

  5. Reminds me a bit of the tall skellie in your banner. A finely painted mini. I have only vague recollections of this one from my youth (seeing it in WD). It's on of the joys of following oldhammer blogs is the rediscovery of rare stuff.

    1. Thanks Dave. Yes, the pale face, contrasting the dark armour perhaps. It has to be one of my all time favourite models. The sculpting of the face, despite its years, still stands the test of time.
