Khorne Warband Complete!

 It's always nice to complete a project, especially in a reasonably quick time. The last phase was wrapping up the four remaining beastmen. So here is the completed group shot.

So that's it. No idea if or when this force will see a game but it'll be a lot of fun if it happens. I must admit, I fudged a few stupid rolls such as chaos lord for the chimera (as if he isn't extreme enough!) and teleportation for the ogre. It's extremely satisfying to get this project completed and the khorne theme doesn't stop here. Up next are some chaos knights, one I've already finished from last year so the plan is to rustle up another 4 to make a unit.
                 

Khorne Warband Update - Citadel Chaos Beastmen

 A quick post this time; rather than wait til all six beastmen have been completed, I've decided to post the first two. Well one of them was actually painted about 5 years ago. I've rebased him plus given him a few alterations as well to fit in with the rest of the band.

The bread and butter of any chaos warband

 I saved the guy on the right from an eternity in the bits box, formally belonging to my mate who had hacked off the original weapon and used him as a blood bowl player.

 I had actually gone off Jes Goodwin beastmen for a fair while. I felt they had a little too much order to them and had favoured the older broo and C27 beastmen instead. However, I've rekindled a bit of love for them and of course, suit the Realm of Chaos warband aesthetic.

 I'm really enjoying a resurgence of painting red armour after an absence dating back to the mid 90's when I stripped virtually everything to begin the chaos army that exists today in metallics.

 So the warband is nearing completion with just four beastmen to go. I'm keen to wrap them up as I'm continuing with the Khorne vibe and have plenty of exciting things planned.

Khorne Warband Update - Citadel CM1 Chimera

 This week, continuing with the Khorne warband followers, I've been working on my roll from the Other table which I always give myself when rolling up a chaos warband, which gives me the excuse to paint something a potentially out of the ordinary plus adds some uniqueness to the retinue. I was delighted to have rolled a chimera.

 It was never in doubt that I would use the classic Nicky Bibby chimera sculpt which came with numerous head and tail options.

 I've had a couple of these kicking about since my early teens and decided to pool my resources and use all of my favourite heads and tail on the one model. Well, maybe apart from the sabre toothed tiger head but it's a little too close to the lion head so I've excluded it. The joins where the heads meet the body are quite gappy so it required a fair amount of green stuff to pack it out and then sculpted into fur with a cocktail stick.

 I've gone for a fairly muted palette on this one; opting for a more classical look over a khorne red appearance. Unfortunately, as I feared, it's been an absolute bastard to photograph and I'm not particularly happy with the end results there but it'll have to do.

 So now there's just the six beastmen to go. I've nearly finished two of them so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have the lot completed and will be able to present a finished warband.

Khorne Warband Update - Harpies

 Continuing with the Khorne warband followers, the next up are a pair of harpies that I'd rolled. Now having already owned the set of the Citadel C48 Gargoyles range and not having any actual harpies, I've gone for two that look non stone like.

 The gargoyle range sculpted by Aly Morrison was small (only 6 figures) and overlooked but quite varied.  You don't see many painted examples of them unfortunately.

 I've decided to go for a khorne colour scheme with mine over a more classical approach. This pair didn't receive any of the dominant chaos attributes.

 So there's six beastmen to go plus the follower from the Other table which is what's up next which I'm really looking forward to!

Khorne Warband Update - Citadel C23 Chaos Ogre

 Continuing with the Khorne warband, I've gone for my favourite (arguably) of the Jes Goodwin ogres. I'd painted one over 20 years ago SEEN HERE and this time decided to go for a different flavour of armour, although maybe I should have gone for red, in keeping with his master.

 He'll be accompanied by six beastmen, two harpies plus something exciting from the Other table from the Slaves to Darkness followers lists which I'll reveal when it's painted. I've always included a roll on the Other table just to add a bit of potential jazz to my warband generating.

 I'll probably hit the beastmen next, although they'll be scattered among a few other works in progress, there's quite a lot on the desk at the moment that I want to wrap up plus there's plenty going on in the old noggin that I need to get into production.

Khorne Warband Update - Citadel Bloodletters

 My next additions to Torranga Sama's retinue posed a slight problem. Can you have Bloodletters in a warband or not? They don't seem to appear on the list of followers in Slaves To Darkness but some daemons (fiends, flesh hounds etc) are depicted in the painted examples of warbands in the book.

 Having owned several Bloodletters for many years and not ever done anything with them, I decided to chuck a couple in anyway.

For all my Chaos paint jobs over the years, these are the only Realm Of Chaos lesser daemons I have actually ever produced

I'm about a third of the way through this warband now and would like to have it wrapped up by Christmas although it appears I may be alternating it with another small project over the forthcoming weeks.

Torranga-Sama, Champion Of Khorne, Chaos Warband Leader

 I didn't want to get too far into this warband project without painting its leader. This has proved a major headache and I had to scrap the initial plan of one of Jes Goodwin's Khorne Champions converted on a juggernaut. It was all going perfectly well until I had issues with the jugger colour scheme and wasn't happy with the opening stages of the champion. This is not the first time I have destroyed a perfectly good Realm of Chaos Champion;  I can think of at least EIGHT who have bit the dust over the years in attempts to convert into mounted characters. The mere thought of it makes me throw up in my mouth.
 Anyway, in the end I went for this guy mounted on one of the three excellent Realm of Chaos steeds.

 Part of me feels like I have wimped out with a slightly less ambitious creation. In fact, it has proved to be a bit of a ball ache all the way; various fuck ups hindering me as I toiled to get him painted. It feels like this whole warband project has been a bit of an ill-fated voyage what with endless figure selection problems (and I'm still not finished there) and numerous frustration. I hope this can change and I start enjoying this project like I was supposed to be.

 Once a Marienburger nobleman named Dirk van den Ruitenbach, he opted to walk the path of Chaos, changing his name to Torranga-Sama.
 As yet, his rewards have been few; his Chaos Steed He'khar, mandatory Khornate armour and the power of regeneration but he has acquired a number of loyal followers; Thugs, Chaos Dwarfs, an Ogre, Troglodytes and the like.

My Chaos Warband Begins

 With my last Bratt ganger not quite finished, I have eagerly made a start on my next project a Chaos Warband which I'm planning on having completed by the end of the year.
 After pondering briefly on which Chaos power to choose I opted for Khorne probably for the main reason that I already have most of their champions and daemons so it saves a lot of time and money hunting stuff down.

 Up first is an Ogre armed with a flint headed spear and axe which is one of the three head variants (and my perosnal favourite of the three) from the AD&D range; a series of figures that I have sometimes tended to overlook, mainly because of limited catalogue appearances.

 I think one of the beauties of painting a warband is that there is enough figure variation to keep one motivated without getting too bogged down with units all looking the same, getting bored, moving on to another project and leaving yet another one unfinished as we all can be guilty of that from time to time.

 The next plan is establish some discipline in order to finish off that Bratt ganger, attempt to bash out something for Orktober and crack on with the next member of this warband, although I haven't decided on who yet; I'm still deciding on final ideas for the leader so it's more likely it'll be a follower or followers of some kind.
